Campaign

LAC has good experience in working with international labour organizations on campaigns and advocacy in the toy, footwear, garment and electronics industry. They include the Clean Clothes Campaign, the Play Fair Campaign, and other regional campaigns supporting the labour struggles in Asia. In the Asian region, LAC is a member of the Asian Trans-National Corporation Monitoring Network (ATNC) and the Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational and Environmental Victims (ANROEV).

Since 2004, LAC has devoted to the ‘Jewellery Campaign’ to support the collective legal struggles of Chinese migrant workers fighting for their legal compensation for the cause of occupational disease. We protested against the Hong Kong employers for their abusive use of labour in mainland China and their non-compliance with the national and international OSH requirements. We also demanded the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Baselworld in Switzerland, which are the two key players in organizing international jewelry trade shows, to ban companies proven with labour rights violations from participating in their trade shows. In 2010, a Hong Kong jewellery company was banned from exhibiting in both Hong Kong and Switzerland. It is the first-ever move of the international trade fair organizers to exercise a sanction on a Hong Kong-owned company over labour rights violations. It also proves that the years of campaigning and lobbying targeting the trade associations and the trade fair organisers for taking up their social responsibilities can bring concrete changes in the behaviours/decision making of these social actors in reacting to calls for labour rights compliance.

[Take Action]Say No to Sex Discrimination at Prada Stop Listing Discriminatory Brand!

From : Labour Action China Date: 15th June, 2011  Press Invitation   Say No to Sex Discrimination at Prada Stop Listing Discriminatory Brand!        Since 2009 Prada Japan have been involved in a case of sexual discrimination, harassment and unfair dismissal. It is also suspected of faking sales figures by forcing its staff to buy its products. The lady involved, Rina Bovrisse, filed for lawsuit in Tokyo in 2009, and brought her case to the attention of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women last year. As yet the case is still unresolved. At the same time, Prada's initial public offering (IPO) was launched on June 17 and the shares will start trading in Hong Kong on June 24. Prada has made attempts of IPO for four times since 2001, but all had failed.        Rina has sought help from Hong Kong labour groups and women groups. We are deeply surprised and offended by the discriminatory action of such a world renowned brand. Prada should publicly account for its action before it is allowed to be listed in Hong Kong.
