Together, Our Voices Make a Difference!

Campaigns that have tried to address violations of workers' rights in the garment and apparel sector have targeted firms including Liz Claiborn, Nike and Adidas. Since these firms dominate a large share of their markets, their actions have ripple effects throughout the sector. Targeting these larger enterprises, activists were able to make a difference.

The jewelry sector is a new challenge. There are a far greater number of firms involved in jewelry manufacturing, and there are fewer large enterprises for activists to focus their energies. Therefore, it is imperative that jewelry trade associations actively address workers' rights violations. Trade associations are in a position to effectively pressure firms of the jewelry sector to protect the lives of workers.

However, it is obvious that the trade associations will not do this of their own volition. Trade associations are sensitive to only their profits. For instance, they have actively and effectively controlled the trade in artificially altered gemstones. Why? They realize that consumers are less likely to buy jewelry when they are afraid the jewelry is fake. It falls to consumers to make these trade associations understand that no one wants to buy jewelry that is effectively murdering the workers who polished the gemstones!

Want to make a difference? Write them! Write the jewelry trade associations and let them know what you think. We provide here the names and addresses of a few trade associations, and a letter for you to consider.
